Blog update: "Lost"

This week a lot of pieces of the forgotten jigsaw puzzle of my career in Rock and Roll got remembered.

Firstly I spent five hours in the Groucho club on wednesday with Steve Andrews, someone who was the A and R man for Generation X way back in 1978 who spent a lot of time hanging out with me and Billy. They were actually people who loved and believed in music in those days. Anyway we spent all afternoon saying do you remember when..... and it was like watching a TV reruns of my early punk days that my memory had long since erased... memories that I had stored on the hard drive of the Tj mind and forgotten where I filed them... I must get these stories down in the blog I thought and I realised I have not written anything for ages...

You know sometimes you blame writing muse for not being there .....but in reality I have only me to blame because I didn’t turn up either.... and I should have been the first in the room.

So here we are...with a story...

The Crack Up Suite - revisited

While we wait for pieces of the 2010 gig schedule to fall into place, Mick and Tony have spent the first part of the year back in the studio, working on new - and old - projects....

Perhaps the biggest surprise to emerge from these sessions is a previously-unheard (and presumed lost) segment of the 2007 Carbon/Silicon release "The Crack Up Suite".

Six unreleased demo tracks from the Crack up Suite sessions - including titles such as "Giving Heaven Hell" and "HillBilly Slamdown" - have now had the full studio treatment, and are set for inclusion in a new, extended version of the album. This new edition of the Crack up Suite will be included in a forthcoming boxed set of CDs, charting the full career of the band to date. We know that the Crack up Suite is fondly regarded by many fans, and we hope you're as excited as we are about the release of "new" material from the same era.

Alongside work on the box set material, the band has also started writing and recording a brand new set of songs, which they're describing as "back to the roots" sessions …two tracks are already completed - we'll bring you more news on these new projects very soon!

Islington Academy Footage

Carbon/Silicon played the Islington Academy last night, as special guests of The Rich Kids. Sadly, Dom couldn't make it out of snow-bound Somerset in time for the gig, so the Rich Kids' own Rusty Egan took over drum duties for the duration of the set.

Happy new year everybody!

Just in case anybody is worried about the status of tonight's Islington Academy show with the Rich Kids (given the crazy weather conditions the UK has been experiencing this week) … we've been assured by the organisers that the gig will go ahead as planned.

Everybody is looking forward to a great show tonight - we think it'll be well worth braving the elements for - but If you're travelling to London for the show today, please allow plenty of time, take extra care and be safe!

As another year draws to a close, we'd like to wish all of Carbon/Silicon's supporters a happy holiday season, and wish you the very best for 2010!

It's been a year with many ups and downs in the C/S bunker. Early 2009 saw the carbs recording an album full of new material, filming with Howard Marks, playing to a huge audience at the Pavilhão Atlântico Lisbon Calling festival, and Mick's Rock 'n Roll Public Library opening its doors to public viewing for the very first time.

Unfortunately, alongside the highs, 2009 brought a number of lows. As you'll gather from reading TJs blog, the band's aspirations and creative ideals were - at times - conflicting with those of their management team. This resulted in a difficult gestation period for Carbon/Silicon's fifth album - The Carbon Bubble - and a quiet summer for the carbs.

By the end of the year, the way forward was clear - Mick and Tony decided to return to the founding principles of Carbon/Silicon, and The Carbon Bubble was released as a free download (get it here). The band are heading into 2010 with a newly-energised, independent outlook. Tour dates are being booked, new CDs and merchandise are being planned… 2010 should be a great year!

2009 was also the year that TJ fell in love with his Zi6 camera, and discovered he had a flair for iMovie editing, so you can expect lots more "video diary" updates from the band in the future. Speaking of which…

Joe MacElderry… Ryan Giggs… Gino de Campo… Rage against the Machine…. forget all those guys - there's only ONE end-of-year contest result that we've been interested in this December: who won TJ's Jack Daniels?

The competition closed at the stroke of midnight on Saturday night. The entries were collated, sorted, double-checked, and - employing the services of random.org as an impartial adjudicator - we selected our winner. The name that got plucked out of the virtual hat was: - (fanfare) - Ben Coffey.

Rich Kids Ticket details

Former Rich Kids members Glen Matlock and Midge Ure have come together to organise a celebratory benefit concert in London. This very special evening will see the coming together of all the original Rich Kids including guitarist Steve New and drummer Rusty Egan. The event will take place at the O2 Academy, Islington on Thursday 7^th January 2010. The show will start promptly at 7pm and tickets will be on sale from Friday 4^th December from www.livenation.co.uk.

Guests confirmed so far are The Illuminations (featuring Clive Langer, Steve Allen and Ian Broudie), TV Smith (from the Adverts), Viv Albertine (from The Slits), Carbon Silicon (featuring Mick Jones and Tony James), Patti Paladin and Gary Kemp (from Spandau Ballet).

Glen and Midge will perform solo slots on the night and Steve New will play with his band Beastellabeast before all four of the Rich Kids take to the stage for one night only. The special guests will no doubt “join in the racket and play guitars very loudly” according to Midge Ure.

TJ has just added a huge blog post to the site, setting the agenda for Carbon/Silicon's future plans. If you haven't read it yet, I urge you to do so at once - it's important stuff!… then head straight back here to find out how YOU can help to make this all happen.

(seriously, just go and read it. I'll hang around here and twiddle my thumbs while I wait for you to finish.)

So here's the plan...

From this point forward, Carbon/Silicon intend to operate on a resolutely independent basis… making the music they love, the way they want to make it, and putting it out on their own terms. No more industry interference. No more pandering to market expectations. Grass-roots DIY punk ethics for the digital age … and - just in case you couldn't infer as much from the tone of the blog - everybody around the band is getting *seriously* excited about the possibilities this kind of freedom can bring.

In the wake of TJ's blog I thought it would be useful to post a quick round-up of the current work-in-progress here at Carbon/Silicon HQ, and take this opportunity to answer some of the questions and suggestions that are now popping up on various forums around the web.

Short-term Priorities:

First (and most importantly): Mick and Tony are determined to return to the core idea of creating and putting out free music on their web site. Carbon/Silicon was *always* about the music, and about exploring the way that bands - or, for that matter, artists of any kind - can connect with their audiences in the 21st century. You've already got your hands on the first fruits of that decision … Carbon/Silicon's latest album - The Carbon Bubble - is now available as a free download from this very site. Expect more to follow soon - "recorded in the moment, as it happens".

Secondly: CD production. The band have been watching the internet response to The Carbon Bubble with a great deal of interest, and have seen lots of people asking for a "physical" release - a high quality, factory-pressed version up for sale. So… we're going to make it happen. The band has been looking into the "fan-funded" recording + merchandising approach that's become popular amongst a number of "true" indie bands recently - even going out for face-to-face discussions and meetings with the people who have already gone down that path - and are confident that the same approach can work for Carbon/Silicon. The business, legal and fulfilment infrastructure required to make this all function properly is already in the process of being set up - no big industry involvement, everything being run by the band itself and the people around them. It's going to take a little while to get all of our ducks in a row and be in a position where we're ready to take orders here on the site…. but bear with us while we sort things out - it's all coming!

Third: Gigs. Again, the forum consensus seems to be that some kind of UK tour is long, long overdue. We hear you, we agree, and we're doing something about it - nothing too lengthy at first (read the blog for the reasons why), but there are some tentative bookings in the frame for the first quarter of 2010 which should firm up over the next few weeks, so watch out for announcements. Also - this was mentioned in TJ's web chat a couple of weeks ago, but probably bears repeating - any offers for shows should be sent to Daisy, whose details are over on the contacts page. (Serious business enquiries only please! We don't want an avalanche of random e-mails from people saying "hey, you should play such-and-such a town"… we appreciate the enthusiasm, but e-mails like that tend to cause hold-ups and take attention away from sorting out the real deals).

Beyond those priorities - expect a lot more interaction here at carbonsiliconinc.com. A couple of weeks ago we streamed out the new album in its entirety a couple of hours before it was officially released. While the music played, TJ joined us in a chatroom session to talk about the making of the album, and to take immediate, un-moderated first-impression feedback from listeners. Was that a world first? Has any other "established" artist ever had the balls to stand up and do that in a public forum? We've got no idea … but what we do know is: it worked, we loved doing it, and mad schemes like that scare the crap out of the traditional music industry. In other words: expect more of that kind of thing very soon :)

OK, enough of what's happening here. The flip-side of all this is…. how do YOU get involved?

(yeah, I admit it… I've been waiting years for another good chance to use those promo pics!)

Right now - and more than ever before - Carbon/Silicon needs to build their listener base. Every day, we get e-mails, instant messages, web site comments etc from people who are basically saying "wow, I love you guys - this stuff is great - but I had no idea you were still making music!". We know for a fact that there's a vast amount of people out there who followed the band members in their earlier careers, who - basically - have no idea that all this is all going on. We really need to reach out and find all those fans (and new ones too!) to make this next phase of the Carbon/Silicon story work.

The practicalities behind this are pretty straightforward… Like Tony says in the blog: to take the show on the road, vans need to be hired, and people need to be paid. If we know there's an audience out there, who will buy the CDs direct from the web site, or who will buy tickets for a show in a particular part of the world, then we CAN make it all happen - but everything starts with the audience.

So this is what we need people to do now: get the word out. Nothing is more important than this. Talk about Carbon/Silicon in places where people still talk about good music. Don't go around spamming on our behalf; we believe the music sells itself - just make people aware that the band exists… that the site is here, this is what we stand for, and this is what we're doing. There's a whole album here ready for people to listen to - no strings attached, no industry BS - they don't even need to hand over an e-mail address to get a copy of the record!

If you use social media - facebook, twitter, myspace … all that kind of stuff… or if you're a blogger - please talk about us there. We're upping our game on all of these platforms; you'll find fully-playable copies of the album on both myspace and facebook (or, as much of the album as they'd let us upload in the case of myspace), and we're pushing out copies of all our main news items and blog entries to those sites. Additionally, we're now "officially" present on social listening sites like last.fm and thesixtyone.com … if you use these sites, please "heart" our tracks and boost their rotation - every little bit of exposure helps us out in the long run!

Most importantly of all … just play the music and share it wherever you can. The Carbon Bubble was deliberately released under a special "creative commons" license which allows you - the listener - to pass on the music to others. As long as you're not using the music for commercial purposes, you're free to incorporate it in things like youtube videos, podcasts, non-profit radio, anything you want (the band *loves* to see their material used to kick-start other artistic work) - no need to get special permission; all we ask for is a credit whenever a track is used.

If you can direct people back to our site, all the better… when people download tracks direct from carbonsiliconinc.com, we get a better feel for the kind of listener figures we have (and even what part of the world those listeners come from!), which is great for our strategic planning… but, really, if you get the music out there for us, it's all good.

Way back up the top of this article, I mentioned the DIY punk ethos. Truth is, we're not really "doing it ourselves". We need - and want - everybody to be a part of this.

Just like the blog says… "There's a lot of work to do. And a lot of FUN to have. That's what it's all about isn't it?"

Following a couple of weeks of forum speculation about the placeholder date over on our gigs page, Carbon/Silicon are now able to confirm that they'll be appearing in a special guest slot alongside the Rich Kids at Islington Academy on 7th January 2010.

The night has been arranged by former Rich Kids members Glen Matlock and Midge Ure, and is being held as a benefit concert for the family of Rich Kids guitarist Steve New, who has battled with cancer for the last year.

Other confirmed guests include The Illuminations (featuring Clive Langer, Steve Allen and Ian Broudie), TV Smith, Viv Albertine, Patti Paladin and Gary Kemp.

Carbon/Silicon announce new Free Download album details.

Carbon/Silicon - the band formed by Mick Jones of the Clash and Tony James of Generation X - are ready to release their long awaited new album “The Carbon Bubble”.

"The Carbon Bubble" is the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed 2008 album “The Last Post”, and contains 12 all-new songs written by James and Jones.

The full album will be released as a FREE download via the official Carbon/Silicon website - www.carbonsiliconinc.com - on Saturday 14th November 2009. Full CD cover and booklet artwork will also be available to download from the site.

Since the unveiling of their debut song "M.P.Free" in 2002, Carbon/Silicon have fully embraced the free download revolution. The Carbon Bubble is the fourth full-length album to be released as a free download by the band.

Rock n Roll Public Library - Redux

The Rock n Roll Public Library will be re-opening its doors for 5 weeks this summer, at a brand new venue under the Westway!

Set in 3500 square feet of former office space, this latest "homecoming" incarnation of Mick's pop-up exhibition will encourage visitors to enrol with the library and interact with the exhibits. Special facilities will be available on-site to allow users to scan various items from the collection, and take away digital copies on memory sticks.

Described as "an artistic response to the likes of the corporate O2 British Music Exhibition", the Rock n Roll Public Library contains a mash-up of items from Mick's life-long collection of punk memorabilia and pop-culture artifacts, and provides a unique guide to the influences behind The Clash, Big Audio Dynamite and Carbon/Silicon.

Carbon/Silicon would like to re-assure all viewers that no ugly deformed frog-men were harmed during the making of this movie.

(Aside from a statistically insignificant proportion. But they deserved it.)

Lisbon Calling...

Carbon/Silicon feature on the cover-mounted CD given away with this month's issue of Uncut Magazine...

"London Pride" features 15 geographically-themed tracks about the UK's capital city, with Acton Zulus accounting for Carbon/Silicon's contribution (of course!). Other artists on the complilation include Madness, Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros, Chris Difford and Belle & Sebastian.

All BUSY on the Western Front...

Further details are starting to emerge from the Carbon/Silicon camp regarding their activities and projects of the past few months.

Needless to say, most of the band's time has revolved around completion of the next album, "The Carbon Bubble", and TJ's latest blog posting - "Recorded in the Moment, as it happens?" - details the inspiration and motivation behind the recording of the album. The article is an insightful glimpse into the current creative philosophies of Mick & TJ, and contains a few teasers and previously-undisclosed track-title clues about the contents of the forthcoming record. The forthcoming public exhibition of Mick's collection - described as "an Aladdin’s cave of popular culture" - has been the hot project over the last few weeks, and has been getting lots of press attention from big-name publications. Mojo, Time Out, The Independent, The NME and The Daily Mirror have all featured articles on the collection, previously seen only by selected guests, press people, and a few lucky visitors to The Bunker. Items from The Rock and Roll Public Library finally go on public display this week, at Chelsea Space (details here). The exhibition runs from the 18th of March to the 18th of April. If you're in London over the course of the next month, be sure to check it out!

TJ has been pretty busy with side-projects too. Just before Christmas he spent a month in Soho, London producing Fangoria - a Glam Dance band who are currently one of Spain's biggest groups. The resulting album - "Absolutamente" was released last week, and went straight to number one in the Spanish charts ... it's a first for the band, who - needless to say - are delighted with the result!

Finally - as mentioned over on the blog - TJ recently took delivery of a Kodak Zi6 Hi-Def mini-camera. This gadget has been getting a LOT of use in the studio over recent weeks... expect to see video news broadcasts and insights appearing via this website very soon!

After a Winter of writing and recording, The Bunker has become a flurry of activity with Tony and Mick finishing over 14 songs prior to mixing. Plans are being discussed about release dates, free tracks and special packages for the album entitled The Carbon Bubble and all the paraphernalia which surrounds the next Carbon/Silicon release.

Howard Marks filming with the band at the studio and Mick's forthcoming Rock N Roll Library exhibition in London have added to the buzz and activity in Sleepy Acton.

Tony has become Director extraordinaire and filmed a section of the library and made a fantastic video to accompany the first track to emerge - Reach For The Sky - which is hitting YouTube and other purveyors of fine films today.

May/June or July are being mooted for possible release dates and the faithful can expect the usual free tracks prior to the release ... more news will be emerging on this site over the next few weeks.

God-Smoked / Chelsea Exhibition Updates

Busy times at Carbon/Silicon HQ - expect lots of interesting news shortly! ...but in the meantime, here's two quick updates on previous stories to whet your appetite:

Firstly, the Howard Marks music-film-documentary dvd - "God Smoked" - which features brand new material by Carbon/Silicon, now has its own web site. You can read (and hear... and watch...) lots more about the project over at www.god-smoked.com.

And secondly... the Chelsea Space website is now showing information about the forthcoming Rock and Roll Library exhibition (opening 18th March). In addition to a comprehensive set of press clippings about the show, the site also has a new selection of snapshots taken during preparations at the Carbon/Silicon bunker.

Sharp-eyed observers might find the caption on that second-from-last photograph to be particularly interesting. Now, as you all know, I'm not one to start rumours (*cough*)... but... expect something interesting to hit the C/S website - as a prelude to the exhibition - at some point in the next few days...

Mr Extraordinary

Carbon/Silicon are scheduled to spend the day filming documentary footage with none other than "Mr Nice" himself, Howard Marks.

The material will feature a brand new Carbon/Silicon track: Mr Extraordinary. Taken from the forthcoming album, The Carbon Bubble, the new track is described by the band as being "an 8 minute psychedelic epic".

The footage is being shot as part of a major documentary on the life of Howard Marks. The band's own film of the day will surface as a video news story soon - watch this space!

The Rock and Roll Public Library - Mick's near-legendary collection of books, records, posters, and other pop-culture ephemera is set to go on public display this March.

The collection - as featured on the cover of The Last Post - also includes artwork, instruments, recording gear, stage clothes and original song lyrics from Mick's time in The Clash, Big Audio Dynamite and - more recently - Carbon/Silicon.

"Here in this room of madness was a kind of archive.. an archive of popular culture across such a broad spectrum from the last fifty years and suddenly a light dawned....... It wasn’t mad..it was ..AMAZING... all that stuff was the greatest library of ideas imaginable and what had been formally and very affectionally known as “the library of a madman” was suddenly becoming “the Rock and Roll Public Library..” suddenly we had this amazing store of knowledge and that this store was part of the band and it’s ideas."

Carbon/Silicon played two sell-out nights in Hammersmith at the start of the week - the latest two gigs in the ongoing "Carbon Casino" series.

The set included three new tracks from forthcoming 2009 album "The Carbon Bubble", and at the end of the gig the band were joined onstage by surprise guest Huey Morgan, front-man of The Fun Lovin' Criminals.

Huey joined the band for a rendition of the FLC hit Scooby Snacks, and a cover version of The Rolling Stones' Honky Tonk Woman.

Keep an eye out for YouTube clips in the near future...

Late-breaking rumor: Tonight's Alabama 3 concert at the Shepherds Bush Empire is expected to feature a couple of suprise special guests, described on the Alabama 3 website as UK Punk Legends.

Members of Alabama 3 joined Carbon/Silicon on-stage for the Soprano-themed "first season finale" of Carbon/Casino, and can be heard performing "Woke up This Morning" on the Carbon/Casino live album.

Could Mick and TJ be about to repay the favour? ;)

Carbon/Silicon's debut single - The News - will be officially re-released on Monday 15th September.

The radio campaign for the release kicked off this morning, with the track being played on on Radio 2's Wake up to Wogan show (presented by Johnnie Walker this week, as Terry is on holiday). "Good Morning, Here's the News...." went out over the airwaves immediately before the station's 8am News broadcast - perfect timing!

The track is also getting air-play on BBC 6 Music, and - if all goes to plan - Nemone will be broadcasting a live interview with Mick during her show tomorrow, at some time between 3 and 3:30pm. Mick is currently in Italy, so communication issues might thwart our plans - but we're keeping our fingers crossed...

R4 Today Programme (UPDATED)

STOP PRESS...

Mick and Tony will be taking part in BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, at 8:30am on Monday 14th July.

They will be speaking live on the show, and explaining their decision to place a "Please rip and distribute" notice on the back of the recently-released Carbon Casino album.

The Today programme is Radio 4's most popular show, and reaches an average of 6 million listeners a week.

UPDATE: Both Mick & Tony turned up for the show, but as the discussion was firmly focussed on "internet stuff" (Tony's department), Mick decided to hand the reins over to TJ for this one. The Today Programme interview with Tony James and Adrian Crooks (of the Performing Rights Society) can now be heard on the BBC iPlayer service.

Longer segments for Five Live and the BBC World Service were also recorded during the trip (more news on those as we get it) and Tony discusses the topic further in an update posted to his blog this morning - check it out here.

It's a busy weekend at Carbon/Silicon HQ...

More good news: the Carbon Casino books have finally arrived at the bunker. The guys are rehearsing for the Hyde Park show today, and signing the books between tracks. Today we can also officially confirm rumours that the band will be playing at this year's Electric Picnic festival in Co. Laois, Ireland - full festival details here. We also hope to be announcing some further gigs very soon.

Carbon/Silicon recorded a slot for the T4 TV Show - "The Nokia Green Room" today. My spies watching the pre-show rehearsal report that - aside from a blistering performance of What The Fuck? - the band debuted a brand new number - "What's up Doc?". Early reports suggest that this is one of their most rocking tracks yet, and destined to be a big live favourite - look out for it at upcoming shows!

In other news, the band have been back in The Bunker recording again this week. When will we hear something? Watch this space!...

Mick and Tony will feature on next week's edition of "The Record Producers", airing on BBC Radio 2 1900 - 2000 Monday 26 May, and repeated on Saturday 30th May on 6 Music.

Regular site visitors will be aware that photographer Peter Stevens (AKA "Thinline Telecaster" on our forums) has been putting together a very special souvenir photo book of material from the early 2008 run of Carbon Casino at the Inn on the Green.

I'm pleased to confirm that the Carbon/Silicon online store is now ready to accept pre-orders for copies of the finished book.

The book is a hardback-only edition of over 160 pages, featuring 280 images of bands, guests, audience, and all the unique shenanigans that became The Carbon Casino. This will be a limited edition run of only 200 copies, and every copy will be personally signed by both Mick and Tony.

Due to print-run logistics - and Mick and Tony's touring commitments - we're expecting the finished books to be ready in approx 6-7 weeks time. Got a video clip of a recent Carbon/Silicon gig?

Carbon/Silicon are putting together a special "video collage" for future promotional use ... and to do this, we need lots of footage of the band in action. This is where you come in - we need your video clips!

The sound quality on the clips isn't critical (as we'll be overdubbing the collected footage with a new soundtrack) - all we need is decent quality visuals... long or short, it's all good! Contributors of anything that we use will be fully credited in the finished production (which will be used for on-line promotion only), and - as an extra incentive - a Carbon/Silicon goody bag of exclusive items will be on offer for the best contribution, as judged by Mick and Tony.

How to contribute:

First, get your video online somewhere, so that we can review it. Footage posted to a site like YouTube, or any other video sharing site would be ideal.

Once you've got your footage online, send an email to the following address, telling us exactly where to find your clip (or clips!). Please note that this address should ONLY be used for video submissions ... we can't answer any other band enquiries here!

IMPORTANT - You should only submit material that you've created yourself - we can only use footage where we have the permission of the copyright holder, so please don't submit stuff that you've "found" on the net!

Then, just sit back and wait ... If we like your footage (and/or we need a copy of the material in an alternative format), we'll be in touch to make any necessary arrangements.

There's no fixed deadline for submissions, but we need this material as soon as possible - so don't waste any time if you want to be in the running for the prize!

Carbon/Silicon are to headline the final night in a series of exclusive South by Southwest broadcasts on US Satellite service DIRECTV.

"DIRECTV gives viewers a front-row seat to the festival with DIRECTV SXSW Live, a live broadcast concert series in HD and 5.1 surround sound direct from Austin, Texas".

Scheduled for 10pm EDT on Saturday March 15th, the Carbon/Silicon show will take place at "The Lone Star Lounge" - a specially constructed venue at the Austin Convention Centre. Complimentary tickets will be available to all festival attendees and members of the general public - space permitting.

Plus, in response to the speculation currently taking place on the C/S forums ... we can now officially confirm that the Casino shows have been extended by one more date. A very special finale to the current run - Carbon Casino 7 - will take place on Friday 29th February.

North America Tour - Update

I've just had word from Carbon/Silicon HQ that Orlando, Florida is the latest addtion to the itinerary for the forthcoming North American Tour!

This means the list of confirmed stops now includes Austin, L.A., San Francisco, Vancover, Seattle, Portland OR, Denver, Kansas, Minneapolis, Chicago, Toronto, NYC, Cambridge MA, Washington DC, Nashville, Atlanta, Indio CA and Orlando.

We're expecting final confirmation of all tour details later this week, and will get full details of all venues and dates onto the site as soon as we can. Keep watching!

Carbon Casino Update

Carbon Casino 3 took place on Friday 1st February, with a special guest appearance by Tymon Dogg.

Over the last few days, video clips of Casino #3 (and previous shows) have been flooding in to YouTube ... there's already far too many to namecheck here, so just follow this link to check out the full list (and be sure to catch the very special performance of Junco Partner, featuring Tymon!)

The reputation of the Carbon Casino nights is spreading fast, and the success of the weekly event is now attracting a huge crowd. It's been acknowledged that - in light of the volume of people who are now attending the event - the existing entry system to the club area is perhaps less than ideal. Therefore, please take note that for future casino shows, tickets to the club area will go on sale at a desk inside the bar at 7pm. (Doors to the venue will be open as usual).

Tickets for this weeks show will be the usual £10, and - as with all the Carbon Casino shows - special guests and surprises are guaranteed!

Video clips are now available at the fuse.tv site... but be warned, they're well hidden(!)

First, start at the Show's homepage (click here). From there, you need to click the "videos" link in the menu on the left hand side of the screen (NOT the video link at the top of the screen - doh!). This should pop up a window containing the video player application. Scroll through the list of available videos, and you should spot the Carbon Silicon links after a dozen or so other entries. There's about 10 minutes of footage in total.

US & Canada Tour 2008

Carbon Silicon are pleased to announce an extended 6-week tour of North America, commencing next month.

The tour kicks off at the SXSW festival in Austin Texas on the 13th of March, after which the band will travel to Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, Vancouver, Nashville and many more stops... rounding off their visit with a performance at the the Coachella festival on April 26th.

Carbon Casino Shows Re-scheduled

Just got the following e-mail, direct from the band...

Carbon/Silicon regret that The Carbon Casino planned for The Inn On The Green, Friday January 18th will be postponed due to an earlier booking which prevents the entire show with guests appearing.

The enormous success of the first night will be continued on Friday January 25th for 5 weeks of Fridays Jan 25, Feb 1, 8, 15, 22 when Carbon/Silicon will be joined by more special guests and a revue show par excellence.

So, just to re-iterate... no show this week (January 18th) ... but the run will be extended by an extra week, closing on the 22nd February, instead of the 15th.

Carbon Casino Review by takethe5th

The first night of Carbon Silicon's six-week residency at the Inn On The Green Ladbrooke Grove promised surprises.

I live in Worcester and Friday nights are a bit of a problem getting to London. Traffic and work commitments make it difficult.(Its a 3 hour normal run) But as luck would have it my hubby had an early morning meeting in London so if I got up early and walked around for four hours waiting for him....we could do it. Ok so it poured with rain all day i was tired and soaked to the skin but after a quick dry out made it at to the venue at 6pm.Mick was standing on the balcony overlooking the road when we arrived having a fag....now at last i can see the benefits of being a fellow smoker...lol

The venue was starting to fill up. We met up with some old friends so had a good chin wag. Watched Mick sign the hugest pile of records and photo's some guy asked him to sign ....Mick is so good humoured and sat and chatted while he did it.

They started taking the door money about 7ish .The bands play in the club room so as soon as you pay your tenner get stamped you can go in and out of it as you wish.There were quite a few bemused locals who wondered what the hell was going on.

First band on was British Voodoo who happen to be Micks cousin Martin's son band . Next up was Adam Masterson i only saw a little of his set he was doing some Frank Sinatra songs pretty good but the queue at the bar was a bit of a battleground and ....ok i do like to chat!!! Apparently Topper was here so the rumour was true .

A lot of the Clash crew were in the house .Johnny Green had come along with Topper. Don Letts, Scratcy Myers, Robin Banks,Glen matlock and various assorted BAD members. Probably a few more i didn't know or recognise but it was good to see the support of old mates for Mick and Topps.

Just before Carbon Silicon set was the fabulous Rotten Hill Gang. They were a sort of mix of the Cracked Actors (one of my favourite bands) and the dub pistols.Well worth seeing .Great to see Mick dancing to You gotta pick a pocket or two(Oliver!!!) he seemed to be having a great time.

Playing between sets was Gary Crowley, providing some great dub, reggae, hip-hop, punk and various mash-ups.

When Carbon/Silicon took to the stage, the tiny venue was full to bursting the venue certainly let in more than the 150 it said on the website info ..

Explaining the intentions for the residency, Tony told the crowd: "We'll be playing some old songs, some new songs, some you know, some you don't and some WE don't!"

Mick started with reading from a book of Second World War poetry .... his poetry corner slot !!! then band then jammed into Really the blues.The set i included 'Magic Suitcase', 'War On Culture', 'The News', 'Really The Blues' 'What The Fuck', 'I Loved You' and 'The Gangs Of England'. Tony sang a song that i didn't know maybe someone can help me out on this one?
The main set concluded with a storming 'Why Do Men Fight? Obviously we were all shouting for more and the band reappeared.

Now came the point were were anticipating all night...was it going to happen??

Mick introduced Topper to the stage to a crowd that was going absolutely mental he explained to those who didn't know that they hadn't played together for 25 years. With a crack of the snare, the unmistakable intro riff to 'Train In Vain' charged into action. The crowd surged forward, camera flashes were going off everywhere. Topper looked fantastic and played brilliantly - the human drumming machine was back and it truly was a wonderful feeling to see him back up there having a great time The smile on Mick's face said it all - he was deliriously happy, and admitted almost immediately when the song finished that it was "a dream come true". 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' followed. At its climax, Topper stood up to a thunderous applause and looked genuinely touched.

So am i glad i made the effort to go to this the historic occasion .......too right i am what a fantastic night. It's just a shame that this was a one off ..maybe Topper will get the urge back to get out there again.....really really hope he does.

Met Topps after and he signed my Proud gallery post card of him i just happened to have in my bag also gave him a great big hug and got a kiss off him..

The Debut of the Carbon Casino was an amazing success, featuring supporting acts British Voodoo, Adam Masterson, the Rotten Hill Gang, Gary Crowley, and - in the biggest surprise of the night - a guest appearance by the one and only Topper Headon!

Playing on stage with Mick Jones for the first time in 25 years, Topper joined the C/S boys for an awesome Clash-themed encore comprising "Train in Vain" and "Should I Stay Or Should I Go". Gliding into 2008...

Glide magazine features a new interview with Mick, available online from today...

“Oil Well” is my favorite. That’s where it’s at to me. “Caesar’s Palace” is about how we’ve all ‘slipped’. I can feel it myself. When I’m in a shop and I look over and I see another guy and we look kinda sickly at eachother. (laughs) That look of recognition. It’s a modern day version of “Lost In The Supermarket”.

And it’s VERY good to be here - at this place - where we are now......all the stuff about long journey and difficult road ahead sure does stand but from where we’re sitting, at this time, it all feels very good. Our first CD “The Last Post” is in shops and “The Crack Up Suite” is a free download....We loved gigging and know there will be much more to come.

We want to thank everyone who has supported us, everyone in the Carbon/Silicon management office, everyone working on the Website and especially everyone who visits this page and enjoys the music.

So in 2008 we will be gigging every Friday during January and February, in London at the Carbon Casino. We’re gonna make this our club.... a club where we can play what we like - old songs, new songs, covers, songs we’ve never played before, songs we’re gonna write, songs where other musicians get up and play with us and songs we haven’t rehearsed (sounds scary) if you call em out! Lets have fun with this.. We’ll get friends to Dj and play the records we like. and, well, lets all hang out around a table together and have a drink.....

We want to roll out the Casino to other cities if we can.... we’re going back to the USA coast to coast... we’re going to Europe and back home and to places we’ve never been.... and putting a lot of new songs out along the way .....because that’s what we love and that’s what this is all about.

Who knows where this journey will take us..... We still believe in the dream which is all that counts and, well just maybe along the way we’ll have the time of our lives....

News just in: Carbon/Silicon will release their third "physical" single - Why Do Men Fight? - on the 4th February 2008.

The single will be available in three formats - Digital Download (5.17 version), CD single (3.58 radio edit), and a 7" vinyl pressing b/w a new recording of Be Good To Yourself.

The single is going out to radio stations next week, and should get its first airplay over the Christmas/New Year holiday.

It’s good to see Jones back in action again, but the real news is how great this band is. Jones and James have taken the political fire and driving rhythms of the Clash, the pop smarts of Gen X and Sigue, and the fire and swing of the R&B, blues, and American rock that originally inspired them and fused it into something special. Highlights from Saturday Night's World Service 75th Anniversary Concert at the IndigO2 arena are now available to stream from the BBC Word service web site. Carbon/Silicon played 5 tracks on the night ... Magic Suitcase, Global War on Culture, and The News made it into the broadcast edit. The show will be broadcast worldwide over the course of the next week. The BBC world service transmits in 33 different languages, and has a weekly audience reach of over 180 million people.

I've just been nudged in the direction of this announcement at the BBC World Service homepage, mentioning that Carbon/Silicon will perform at their "free to speak" 75th Anniversary Concert tomorrow. Word is they'll be playing a short (20 minute) "special guest" slot, prior to headliner Katie Melua. This is very much a last-minute confirmation, just sorted out today (hence the lack of advance warning)

Carbon/Silicon will hit the stage at 8:45pm, and the show is expected to be recorded for future broadcast.

Carbon/Silicon is a project created by Mick Jones and Tony James. It marks the third distinct phase in both of their careers. As many people know Jones took a change of pace from The Clash sound with Big Audio Dynamite. James took even a bigger leap from Generation X with the outrageous Sigue Sigue Sputnik (Little known trivia: both Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Big Audio Dynamite were on the soundtrack to 80’s flick Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)...

Martin Wong of Giant Robot Magazine dropped us a link to his Blog entry on last night's Troubadour gig...

Last night I got to meet one of my heroes. Mick Jones came through town with his buddy Tony James and their new band, Carbon/Silicon. Through Giant Robot, I've had a pleasure of meeting a lot of people that I look up to, but this was really special. When I was in junior high and high school, I bought all of The Clash's albums on vinyl and studied the inserts while I listened to the songs over and over. Looking back, the British punk band affected not only my view of music but also informed me on politics, art, fashion, and society in general. (All this for the better, I think.) The first concert I attended was The US Festival in 1983, which The Clash headlined, and I've seen documentaries on the band, bought expensive bootlegs, read books about them, and lived through the deserved hoopla about the death of the group's front man Joe Strummer.

So I was more than a little worried about meeting Mick. What if, after all this time, he turned out to be a jaded rock star or an arrogant dick?...

Carbon Silicon announce a 6-week London residency - "The Carbon Casino" - each Friday from January 11th until February 15th 2008.

To give everybody a chance for entry, there will be NO advance tickets for these shows - just turn up on the night holding a £10 note!

Bar opens at 5pm, Club from 8pm to 1am, with the band on stage from 9:30.

There will be different support acts, DJ sets (including sets from Gary Crowley), and special guest players weekly.

The band are promising different sets, including many songs that have never been played live before, cover versions, and some very special surprises...

Is it just me or are music magazines getting just slightly out of control with these lists of the '50 Most Important Rock Stars Ever' and so on? We've had most important this, greatest that, and Q's recent '21 people who changed music' reached new heights of the absurd and excuse me if you're an Ian Brown'Roses fan and all that but I hardly think he ranks above people like James Brown, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley or let's say Hank Williams (well they had Elvis so oldies were included) or Miles Davis as significantly altering the direction of popular music as we know it.

Chuck in a few more contemporary favourites such as Thom Yorke and, excuse me, Damon Albarn (oh come on) and I would start getting really pissed off if I was Paul Weller, George Clinton, Eric Clapton, Prince, Sly and Robbie, Joe Strummer/Mick Jones and about 6,000 other people and they may as well change the topic to 'lots of people who deserve a nod in the last 50 years' or something. And I know that these articles will get just about everyone and his uncle going 'If you include him then what about her?' which is really what they are supposed to do - provoke.

Hah, see, I fell for it. Anyway, whatever next? 100 Greatest Roadies Ever, The 12 people who changed the accordian. Etc. Give it a rest. There are better ways to sell a magazine.

But anyway, this did get me thinking about lists (well so did Nick Hornby actually) I was on this junk trip recently, which is what we do in Hong Kong you see, and it's got nothing to do with rubbish collecting, junk being a small, pleasant sailing vessel usually loaded to the hilt with cold beers, wine, scantily clad people being silly and lo and behold - a karaoke machine. (Look, out here even the toilets have karaoke machines in them.) Anyway, this wailing box on the junk was commandeered no sooner than we had set sail with a few of the locals bawling out Canto-pop (the local brand of trashy radio play fare) so badly that even the jellyfish were making a run for it and they can't run. This had to stop. Me being mister 'I'm in charge of the music' I let it go for a bit before persuading them that the 66 year old Chinese boat owner and his wife actually would prefer it if we played something more soothing (we were swerving a bit here and there once the high notes were being butchered and there are rocks everywhere so I was actually being responsible) and before long I had slipped in one that I had prepared earlier and we were all bouncing along to such breezy favourites as 'Living in another world' by Talk Talk and 'Knocked Up, Kings of Leon' and as I was lying there on top deck sipping a Tsing Tao I wondered what would be the ultimate junk trip playlist. And then I thought, I'm getting as silly as those magazines so I left it there. It's all very subjective isn't it? Suffice to say thought that Pastime Paradise by Ray Barretto (the best cover - Ever!) sounds very good when bobbing up and down on the South China Sea on a sunny day.

I'll leave you with a China note. It was recently unveiled that hip hop didn't originate from New York or anywhere else in America. Go to You Tube and key in 'MC Farmer' to check out the man from Mongolia who's got a bag of his own.

Now that's what I called changing music.

The CNN showbiz website has just posted an interview with the band, along with a short multimedia slideshow.

"Both Jones and James are dripping with enthusiasm for their music, despite the many years of relentless touring and recording under their belts, and more Carbon/Silicon releases are assured. Asked what they would sound like, James says, only half-joking, that he wouldn't be surprised if Jones started writing jazz. But one thing is guaranteed, with these two at the controls, anything is possible."

Okay folks, think of this as your letter from Hong Kong and I'll be updating it every week. It'll be interesting to see how murmurings on Carbon Silicon begin to emerge here, starved as we are really of any local channels for music. Basically of course, the internet gets around all that (if you have the time to tune in without copping out too much, seeing as everyone here is obsessed with 1. Making money, 2. Making more money, and 3. Making more money while eating - it's no coincidence that it's called Dim Sum because it's tradional to eat those dumplings while doing your sums...).

We have no local English language radio really (well, not music, and not as you might know it) so in terms of local channels for plugging in to new music, we're pretty much stuffed. If you want to unearth anything new and interesting you've got to actively go looking which means taking the time and trouble for online radio, magazines (Q, Mojo, Uncut etc) or stumbling your way around the local HMV trying to buy CDs based on deciphering album covers or 'HMV recommends' which could mean anything really.

So how? Okay, there's iTunes, but get this - we can't sign up and buy out here. Something to do with piracy concerns in Asia, which to me seems somewhat arse about face as if you made tunes readily available through legit channels surely that would er.. at least cut down on the problem, no? (Hello? Apple?) So what are we left with?

Well, the CD reviews in the local paper for one thing. Hm. Okay, here are the albums reviewed in this Sunday's South China Morning Post Sunday paper: 1 PJ Harvey - White Chalk 2. Radiohead - In Rainbows 3. Steve Earl - Washington Square Serenade 4. Chamillionaire - Ultimate Victory And that's your lot for this week folks, if you're one of those forty something ex music obsessed ex pats who are stuck in a Jesus and Mary Chain time warp, that's how you get a sniff of anything new and interesting (and these reviews are far from reliable as I found out when I picked up a copy of the 'excellent' Boards of Canada and ended up bloody bored of Hong Kong, though I did discover Jolie Holland via said section in local paper).

A far more reliable gauge of what's new and good is my 3 year old lad Cameron, who it must be says has an ear on him. Anything that pops up on the stereo passes the test when he looks up from his Lego and demands "See CD cover, see CD cover.." Which means he wants to check out what's on and give it his approval. So far Gregory Isaacs has passed the test, so have The Beatles, Temptations, Al Green, Arctic Monkeys and I haven't even started him on the funk yet.... I'm pleased to report that so far the Carbon Silicon album has had favourable initial plays so far, Really The Blues prompted an impressive wobbly ritual of foot shuffling and arm waving, while Magic Suitcase has had requests for replays. Quite impressive really when you think Puff the Magic Dragon was all I was into at his age.

So back to Hong Kong. There is an outdoor sort of indie concert which they have in a park out here every year which is made up of mostly underground bands out here, the odd Japanese hip hop crew and maybe one biggish name artist from the UK. Not sure it's happening this year as I haven't seen anything so I guess Hong Kong music punters will have to be content with, er, Avril Lavigne and Black Eye Peas although I do hear that Engelbert Humperdinck is coming out..... London, you don't know how lucky you've got it.

This morning's Saturday Telegraph reviews The Last Post amongst its Pop CDs of the Week, describing their listening experience as "the pleasure of hearing a beloved talent regain his stride, with dignity, idealism and some rockin' good tunes" ... and a lengthy piece in this morning's Vancouver Sun - Carbon/Silicon could be a perfect mix - credits the album as being "a strong, buzzy blend of updated post-Clash riffs and tough modern beats with Jones's defiant but edgy vocals riding overtop". Meanwhile, industry tip-sheet DMC Update has listed The Last Post as their Album of the Week.

Elsewhere, The U.S. media is gearing up for the North American release of The Last Post by Caroline Records on the 23rd October, with articles in Harp Magazine and Aversion.com both drawing connections between Carbon/Silicon's online distribution tactics and the current media buzz surrounding Radiohead's new album.

Welcome to the new-look Carbon/Silicon News pages!

First, I guess I should introduce myself: My name is Shep (actually, my mum calls me "John" - but you know how internet forum names have a tendency to stick!). Some of you might recognize me as the editor of the "semi-official" fan news page - carbonsilicon.info. Well, after a lengthy period of bribes and negotiations (half a dozen beers and a ticket to the last bunker gig) I'm pleased to announce that Mick + TJ have recruited me to help anchor the news area here on the official site. You'll continue to see plenty of contributions from the band posted here - but hopefully I'll be able to help fill in the information gaps when the band are busy in the studio, out on the road, or doing whatever else it is that international rock megastars do...

The new website is still coming on-line -- section by section -- but you can already see what we've got planned for the News pages right here. In addition to the main news column, there's a section for rumours that we've picked up around the net or during after-gig chats (which I'll do my best to pester the band for a definitive answer over), an official podcast/video slot that should be coming online very soon, and a "Guest Columnist" section, for which the band are lining up some very special contributors.

Lastly - but perhaps most importantly - there's this section; the column for YOUR news about the band. I know it's a bit of a cliché, but we really do live in an age where news is spreading faster and faster... YouTube footage and gig reviews seem to start flying to all corners of the world within minutes of the band leaving the stage...

Long-time readers might remember that - a couple of years ago - TJ posted an opinion piece here entitled "Surfing the Digital Tidal Wave", discussing the excitement (and trepidation) involved in starting a new band in the digital age. The reality is, the "wake" behind that digital tidal wave -- the news reports, digital media, and opinion pieces that end up being filed and posted around the net -- is so vast, and so unpredictable, that nobody - not even the band - can possibly track its effects, or know what's washing up where...

Here's where you come in: We believe that there's no news gathering agency on the planet as resourceful -- or as dedicated -- as an army of interested fans. We'd therefore like to recruit YOU - our site regulars - as roving "stringer" reporters for the band. If you spot any content on the net about Carbon/Silicon - or have any Carbon/Silicon content that you'd like to contribute yourself (reviews, links to footage/pictures, blog links, or anything else...) let us know! Click the "send your story" link on the main news page, or just drop a message to news@carbonsiliconinc.com. We'll publish your items here, and credit you with your own byline.

The internet fan community has always been hugely important to Carbon/Silicon. Your influence, support, and feedback has helped to shape the band since its inception, and has been pivotal in the transformation from "two old friends jamming a new tune" to a fully-fledged touring outfit with a new album in the shops. As Carbon/Silicon start waxing their digital surfboards for the next (bigger!) wave, the need to keep that conversation going with the fans is as important as ever. On Saturday night, The Gary Crowley Show (BBC London) included a special a 1-hour interview with Mick and Tony. The show is available to replay "on demand" for the rest of this week at the BBC Listen Again service. Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/, and click the "Listen Again" button. Scroll down the programme list and select "Gary Crowley". The interview begins at around the 1 hour mark.

Danny Baker also cornered MJ + TJ en-route to the recording session, and had an impromptue chat at the start of his Thursday afternoon show, which is also online for a couple more days - select the "Danny Baker - Thursday" broadcast. Mick and TJ are introduced about 8 minutes into the show.

Love Music Hate Racism - "School CD".

Carbon/Silicon have contributed a new recording of The Network's Going Down to the Love Music Hate Racism "School CD" project. The scheme involves distributing empty LMHR sleeves to schools across the country, and encouraging pupils to download exclusive tracks in an effort to raise awareness of the LMHR movement. In addition, the 17th October issue of NME is scheduled to carry a cover-mounted copy of the completed disk.

Other contributors to the project include Maximo Park, Babyshambles, Bloc Party, Dirty Pretty Things, The View and The Enemy.

The Last Post will be released October 1st, and Mick and Tony will be the subjects of one of those rather splendid My Inspiration campaigns at HMV which doff cap to people with previous - as the saying goes. Part of the campaign will be a competition by HMV to have 15 or 20 people attend a special concert at The Bunker - which will be filmed for broadcast on line and at HMV stores from the album release date.
The photo session for the album cover and the My Inspiration shot took place on Monday 30th after much building of barricades of memoribilia - the results of which are Sgt. Pepper like.

We've confirmed that Carbon/Silicon will play the free festival on tyneside on Monday 30 May - a bank holiday - Bank Holiday Monday is FREE - 3 stages on the Quayside to 25,000 people.. more details soon..bands appearing including Futureheads, The others and many more.. Ticket details of October shows now posted.... Thanks to everyone who came to the last 4 shows and made us feel so welcome...you make it all worth the climb up the mountain again!..... The tour continues with a special guest appearance at the LMHR gig at the London Astoria with about 7 or 8 other acts, followed by Leeds, Blackburn, Liverpool, cardiff and Exeter......more shows to come..more songs to record... and I know you're wondering when you can BUY a CD from us.... well, we will put one in stores sometime, but meanwhile you can get the tracks NOW on a P2P network near you... The discography section on the Carbon/Silicon site is now up and working - this will feature free downloads of many of the tracks as soon possible.....as well as the stories behind the 3 CDs.... these are currently not available to buy from us but official CDs will be available in the near future - we hope to have recordings available by the next gigs and for free download ..meanwhile check out the many videos of the live shows from other fansites.. the family section, with info on all the band members will be up next.. The band are currently in the studio recording for the 4th CD album and preparing to play all the new songs live..stay tuned to this site....
